Introducing the New Kia K5:

The Optima's Spiritual Successor Debuts for the 2021 Model Year with Impressive Upgrades

For two decades, the Kia Optima was known for delivering a blend of features, style, and value unmatched in the mid-size sedan segment. This summer, the venerated model is taking things a step further, with a full redesign that includes a bolder style, new powertrain options, and available all-wheel-drive. To match the model's dramatic upgrades, Kia is also giving it a new designation. Say hello to the all-new Kia K5.

Kia K5: Performance

The Optima's previously optional power plant is now standard for the Kia K5. The turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine pairs with a new eight-speed automatic transmission, sending 180 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque to the front wheels. New for 2021, the K5 also offers the improved handling and traction of all-wheel-drive, available on LXS and GT-Line trims.

For Baltimore drivers seeking even more internal motivation, the all-new GT trim level unlocks the Optima's full potential with a new turbocharged 2.5-liter engine paired with a Kia-first eight-speed dual-wet-clutch transmission. Generating an impressive 290 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque, Kia estimates the K5 GT can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in just 5.8 seconds.

Kia K5: Design and Interior

The K5 eschews the Optima's slightly understated sporty aesthetic, going on all in with an aggressive yet elegant design that highlights the model's athleticism. Wider, lower, and longer than its predecessor, the K5's exterior features a bold "tiger nose" front fascia with a wide black grille and deep-set dynamic lighting clusters. With its sculpted hood, aerodynamic profile, and swept-back design, the K5 looks ready to pounce, complementing the models engaging handling and potent engine options.

On the inside, the K5 is attractive, inviting, and uncluttered, with high-quality materials and sophisticated design elements throughout the cabin. The K5 enhances the experience with a range of standard and available comfort amenities like dual-zone automatic climate control, heated and ventilated seats, leather upholstery, a panoramic sunroof, and genuine metallic and wood trim.

Kia K5: Technology

The Kia K5 comes standard with an eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Bluetooth technology that can connect two phones at the same time. Standard smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto works wirelessly, freeing up the USB port for other uses like charging.

Available tech amenities include a larger 10.25-inch touchscreen, an eight-inch head-up display, and a wireless smartphone charging pad.

Kia K5: Safety

The new Kia K5 offers a safer and more enjoyable driving experience no matter which trim level you choose. Kia's Drive Wise suite of advanced driver-assistance technologies comes standard and includes features like:

  • Forward Collision Avoidance-Assist with Pedestrian Detection
  • Smart Cruise Control
  • Blind Spot Collision Warning
  • Rear Cross Traffic Collision Warning
  • Lane Keeping Assist
  • Driver Attention Warning
  • Automatic High Beam Assist
  • Rear parking sensors

Available Highway Driving Assist augments standard adaptive cruise control by using navigation data to prepare for upcoming curves and automatically match the posted speed limit.
